… the life I have wanted for my dogs

It isn’t uncommon for someone to get a herding breed …

… then fall in love with all that they have to offer …

… then start to learn how to work with them …

… then give up the life they know so they can know a different life with their dog …

… then move or buy a piece of property and get stock of some sort …

… and then the tale continues forever and more …

I have always had a tinge of envy when this happens, and it really does happen that often, it was just not in the cards for us until recently.

A bigger piece of working property, for each one of my dogs. I have always secretly promised them more space, stock animals, more gardens, and more of my time with them.

While my dogs lives have been rich with dog sports, work, hobby herding, hiking, and travel adventure, it is the land that I have always wanted for them.

Each one of them.

Story is my Old Man, and for those of you that have known him since he was a puppy, you know what a true gift he has been and the path he has taken me on.

Thirteen and a half years of perfection with this Old Man. And while his joints are starting to show some aging, and he sleeps longer hours, he manages to do what he wants to do, and hangs with wherever the activity is.

Every morning since we have been on our new farm, he comes out to do morning work with me or Spore, whatever it is. He likes to go where ever one of us goes.

It isn’t uncommon now to see him take a break as the sun comes up over the Bridgers to warm his old bones. Just an Old Man in the morning light, and it makes me pause, this is what I have dreamed of for so long.

I am grateful to tears for every morning I have with him out here, that he finally gets to live the life I have always promised him.

My younger dogs will grow up to think this is just normal, how all my dogs have lived, but Story I think on some level knows the difference, of how special this is, every morning, truly.

… and then we started to know the life I always dreamed of for my dogs, and it was everything I had hoped for …

I remember those 13 years ago when Artie met Story and it was love at first sight. Even with her at dimunitive size and he at large size they really liked each other.
