BORDER FARM
For those that have been coming over regularly for order pick-ups or classes you have seen the change in our pastures, mostly that our Ladies are getting large, one in particular that looks like she shallowed a flying-saucer!
We are known for healthy high-multiples, triplets and quads are usual on our farm.
As we enter the final month of gestation, for half of our herd, there are little things we do that add up to a lot of good big things. Super simple and super important.
- We keep our nails trimmed and clean every day. The closer we get to kidding the more important this becomes
- We go to bed earlier and wake up earlier
- We watch mineral salt intake and kelp intake, some of our ladies require a bit more oil (wheat germ and olive oil) for energy, some a splash more molasses (quick energy), and everyone daily acv (this allows easier breakdown of food in the rumen so they can eat what they need while the kids compete for abdominal space … this is super real)
- We look at poop to see if everyone is good
- Daily pasture walks to keep our large kid filled mama’s healthy but not overly exercised (no running please!)
- We have more brushing and more snuggle time as they get super needy and affectionate during the final stage of pregnancy
- Creating our maternity buckets – old towels, paper towels, bottles, jars of molasses, scissors, betadine, ez-udder to gather the colostrum for the first feeding, etc. Nice to get this done now
- We make a real effort to really eat and really drink between chores so we don’t run out of steam while tending to our mama’s

PAWS & PEOPLE

TRAINING
RESOURCE GUARDING – this is a normal canine behavior, not abnormal, all the same most homes don’t want this and it can be super difficult to work with. It is guarding a resource that a dog perceives as super important – food, toy, person, place, thing, event, or other dog. The less confident a dog is the more they will guard as they aren’t sure they can ever have it back. The more confident a dog is the least amount of guarding you will see as they know if they want it they can have it.
BUT, the most common resource guarding I see is accidentally manufactured in the home with inappropriate handling of items – pulling things out of a dogs mouth, taking away a valuable chew item to show them who is boss, chasing down a young dog with an item you don’t want them to have, allowing a young dog to think guarding your bed is cute, etc to infinity.
